This ballad spent 9 weeks at the top of the Billboard Charts in the early 60s.  The song title is the name of a place where you could be killed in search of true love.  What's the title of this tragic pursuit of love?

ANSWER:  "Wolverton Mountain" was the hit that launched Claude King's career in 1962.
They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain if you're looking for a wife
Cause Clifton Clovers has a pretty young daughter
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey and Wolverton Mountain protects her there
The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clovers if a stranger should inter there

All of my dreams are on Wolverton Mountain I want his daughter for my wife
I'll take my chances and climb that mountain
Though Clifton Clovers he may take my life
Her tender lips..

I'm goin' go up on Wolverton Mountain it's too lonesome down here below
It's just not right to hide his daughter from the one who loves her so
Her tender lips...

I don't care about Clifton Clovers I'm gonna climb up on his mountain
I'm gonna take the one I love I don't care about Clifron Clovers

Who attended Auburn University, was a guitarist with Roy Orbison, toured with the Beatles, opened for the Rolling Stones, was a songwriter, had six top 40 hits and a number one song, their own nationally syndicated television show, children stories and videos and is an accomplished painter?

ANSWER:   Bobby Goldsboro
In 1964 Bobby started his solo career by recording the first of a string of sixteen top-forty hits, “See the Funny Little Clown.” One of his first concert bookings had him opening for the Rolling Stones on their first U.S. tour! More million-selling hits followed, setting the stage for 1968 and the classic, “Honey,” which became the largest-selling record in the world! “Watching Scotty Grow,” “Little Green Apples” and “With Pen in Hand” have also become classics.

1973 brought Bobby his own nationally syndicated television show, which ran for three successful seasons and became the highest rated variety show in syndication in the ‘70’s. His quick wit made him a much sought-after “regular” on the TV talk show circuit as well. Bobby then formed House of Gold Music, which became one of the most successful music publishing companies in Nashville, publishing such songs as “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Behind Closed Doors.”

This singer's pesky nickname had a worldwide hit with a catastrophic title.  What is the name of the artist including the pesky nickname?
New Hint: It's a female singer and the song's title is Armageddon like.

ANSWER: Skeeter Davis
Mary Frances Penick was born on December 30, 1931 in the small Appalachian town of Dry Ridge, Kentucky. As a child, her grandfather nicknamed her "Skeeter" because she was always active and buzzing around like a mosquito. She got her start in music as part of the duo, The Davis Sisters, along with childhood friend, Betty Jack Davis. Thus, Skeeter Davis was born to the rest of the world.
During the 1960's, Davis was one of RCA's most successful country artists. She had 26 U.S. country hits, 12 of which crossed over to the U.S. pop charts. Among these was what was to become her trademark song, the million-selling record "The End Of The World" which peaked at number two in both the U.S. country and pop charts in 1963. She also earned her only UK chart presence with "The End Of The World" which topped out at number eighteen in only thirteen weeks on the chart.

This 80s dance band got their name from three streets in their hometown.  Their band name is also used in announcements in London's tubes.  What is their name?

ANSWER: The GAP Band
Born and raised in Tulsa, OK, the Wilson brothers began going by the name of their hometown streets, Greenwood, Archer and Pine Streets Band. As advertising such a name on posters became too lengthy, the group shortened the name to the G.A.P. Street Band. Due to a typographical error, the group was advertised as Gap Band and it stuck.
The London Subways uses the term "Mind the Gap" to alert riders exiting cars of the space between the platform and the car.

This recording artist has chartered hits in pop/rock, easy listening and country.  This person has nearly 30 gold records and became an international star.  Starting their career at a very young age, this explosive star sang apologetically  about many subjects including a holiday song that has become a standard worldwide.  Who is this recording star?

ANSWER:
 Brenda Lee
They once referred to Brenda Lee as Little Miss Dynamite because such big noises came out of such a little girl, but she sure wasted no time making her way to the top ten list. From her famous "I'm Sorry" to a soulful "Emotions" to "All Alone Am I", she was the perfect female vocalist of the early sixties, sharing the limelight with Connie Francis, who also had a number of top ten hits in the same era. With "Break It To Me Gently", "Losing You", and "Everybody Loves Me But You", she enjoyed a long string of consecutive hits. So, too, with "I Want To Be Wanted", "Sweet Nothings", "Fool Number One", "You Can Depend On Me", "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and "sweet Nothings", she guaranteed her place in popular music history.

Wrapping up Black History Month with (I hope) a tougher question.  This Alabama superstar actually had three careers and is known worldwide. Who is this multi-talented person?
Your only hint:

ANSWER: BO JACKSON
Iron Bowl,
Dec. 1, 1984:  Bo went the wrong way and Alabama picked up a 17-15 victory. A field goal would have given Auburn the lead, but head coach Pat Dye decided to go for the touchdown. The ball went to Brent Fullwood and Jackson was supposed to block, but he headed in the wrong direction, leaving Tide defensive back Rory Turner free to "wax the dude'' (Fullwood), preventing the score. Vincent Edward Jackson was born on Nov. 30, 1962, in Bessemer, Alabama. In June 1982, he was selected in the second round draft by the New York Yankees, but turned them down to accept a football scholarship to Auburn University. He culminated his Auburn career as the Heisman Trophy winner. Although drafted by the NFL, Jackson chose baseball and in 1986 he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals. In 1987, Jackson was back in the NFL draft and signed with the LA Raiders when owner, Al Davis, agreed to let him play both sports. He was the first athlete to play in the All-Star Game of two major sports. In July 1989, the famous "Bo Knows" commercials began to air, but two years later Jackson suffered a career-threatening injury during a playoff game and eventually underwent artificial hip replacement surgery. His football career over, he continued to play baseball. After being released by the Royals, Jackson played for the White Sox and then the Angels. Continuing problems with his hip forced him to retire in 1994.

He went back to school (Auburn) and graduated in December 1995 with a bachelor of science degree in family and child development. Bo acted in several movies including "The Chamber" in 1996, from John Grisham's novel. ESPN reports, "He opened a motorcycle shop outside Chicago and went into partnership with Charles Barkley on an Alabama restaurant. He serves as president of the Sports Medicine Council, a non-profit, youth outreach organization of HealthSouth Corporation.  Bo now owns and runs a company called N'Genuity in Chicago that does food processing and distribution."

Bo attends the premiere of the movie "The Chamber" in 1996.  Bo has appeared in several films.

This world renowned singer and musician was born just over 100 miles from JWR's headquarters in Brookwood.  Their father was a preacher and this musician, who later became known as a singer, got their start in the church.  What is this artist's name?

Hint # 1: Louvre (One of his hit songs was "Mona Lisa" which is housed in the Louvre)
NATHANIEL ADAMS COLE

Instruments: Piano, Vocals
Date of Birth: March 17, 1917
Place of Birth: Montgomery, Alabama

Born Nathaniel Adams Coles in 1917, at four he moved to Chicago when his father was called to the True Light Baptist Church. Even at that age he could sing "Yes, We Have No Bananas" as he accompanied himself on the piano. His first public performance as a pianist was at four in Chicago's Regal Theater. His mother, who was his first music teacher, wanted him to become a classical pianist.

Although as early as 12 he played the organ and sang in his father's church, his interests were with jazz - an interest and type of music that displeased his parents because of Jazz's connection with nightclubs and the sporting life. However, three of Nat's brothers - Eddie, Fred and Isaac - were already jazz musicians, and Nat first played piano in Eddie Coles's jazz band, the Rogues of Rhythm.

In 1936 he moved to Los Angeles where he formed a group that later became the King Cole Trio. In 1943, he recorded his first national hit record, "Straighten Up and Fly Right," which was based on one of his father's sermons and on a traditional black folktale.

Success followed with "It's Only a Paper Moon" in 1945, "The Christmas Song" in 1947, "Nature Boy" in 1948, "Mona Lisa" in 1949 and "Too Young" in 1951.

Cole was the first black jazz musician to have his own weekly radio show (1948-49).

In early 1956, Cole returned to Alabama, where his integrated group played to a segregated audience in the municipal auditorium in Birmingham. Four members of the White Citizens Council attacked him on the stage. Although hurt, Cole returned to the stage and completed his performance for the audience of 4,000. Cole, who had frequently visited in Montgomery, vowed never to return to the South, and he did not.

Later that year he became the first black to have a weekly show on network television (1956-57), but the show was canceled because it could not find a national sponsor. Although Nat 'King' Cole moved away from jazz, and is best known as a melodious, smooth singer of such popular songs as "Pretend," "Route 66," "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" and "Rambling Rose," his stronger claim to a place in musical history is as a jazz pianist. He is also known as an actor in "St. Louis Blues" (1958) and "Cat Ballou" (1964).

This world renowned R&B singer was born only 25 miles from JWR's headquarters in Brookwood.  They had many hits and made it as high as number 3 on the Billboard Charts.  Their professional name was given to them by another famous musical figure.  What is this R&B artist's stage name and their real name?

Hint # 1: United States Postal Service (Dinah was featured on a U.S. Postage stamp in 1993)

ANSWER:
Dinah Washington/Ruth Jones

Born Ruth Jones in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in August 1924, Dinah Washington moved to Chicago’s South Side when she was three or four. Her mother played piano at St. Luke’s Baptist Church, passing along her keyboard prowess to her young offspring. Spirituals comprised much of her initial focus; she hooked up with gospel pioneer Sallie Martin in 1940, hitting the road for a time as her accompanist. Yet secular pursuits had long intrigued her. Before joining Martin, the young singer had copped first prize at a Regal Theater amateur contest.

Whether it was bandleader Lionel Hampton, booking agent Joe Glaser, or Garrick Stage Bar boss Joe Sherman who gave Ruth the memorable stage handle of Dinah Washington, there’s no disputing her steady rise to stardom. A featured billing the Garrick led Hampton to hire her to sing with his big band in 1943.

Jazz critic Leonard Feather caught her with the Hampton band that December at Harlem’s Apollo and convinced Keynote Records to sponsor her debut session, but recording opportunities proved scarce while she was in Hampton’s employ. Before year’s end, Washington bid Hampton adieu, recording three Los Angeles sessions for the Apollo label under her own name before signing with the then-fledgling Mercury. She cut her first date for Mercury in January 1946, and by the summer of ’48 her solo star was in rapid ascension.

At the same time, Washington was interacting with some serious jazz royalty. She recorded with trumpeters Clifford Brown and Clark Terry, drummer Max Roach, and saxophonists Lockjaw Davis and Cannonball Adderley in the mid-Fifties, utilized Quincy Jones’s budding talents as an arranger, and employed pianist Wynton Kelly, drummer Jimmy Cobb, and tenor saxophonist Eddie Chamblee in her combo for extended stretches. (Chamblee was also one of her many husbands.)

Finally, in 1959, Dinah Washington made the full-fledged leap to pop stardom, thanks to the lovely Belford Hendricks-arranged ballad "What a Diff’rence a Day Makes". Under a&r man Clyde Otis’s market-savvy direction, she mined more pop gold with the stately "Unforgettable" and "This Bitter Earth". It was Otis’s brainstorm to pair Washington with her deep-voiced label mate Brook Benton; their seemingly playful duet "Baby, You Got What It Takes" masked serious tension between the two, but the end result was a giant pop and r&b hit in 1960.

An unintentional but lethal combination of alcohol and pills forever stilled Dinah Washington’s magnificent voice in Detroit on December 14, 1963. She was only thirty-nine.
