Nick Takes Top
Honors in State

Being a state
champion is not something new to No. 4 Mine’s Nick Threlkeld.
His latest honor was winning the Alabama State Mine Foreman award
for making the highest score on the three-day exam. Nick, 25, is a
Longwall Foreman and former All-State basketball and football player
at Hubbertville High School. He was also chosen as a McDonald’s
All-American basketball player and the offensive player of the year
in football. Nick played basketball at Birmingham-Southern College
and studied business before starting his career.
Nick isn’t new to coal mining either. His father has over 30 years
with the Drummond Company and now works at their Shoal Creek Mine.
Nick got his start at Shoal Creek and worked there for a year as a
Longwall Helper. When the mine suffered a fire, he went to work at
the Pinn Oak Mine in Oak Grove but was laid-off after eight months.
“I only needed to work two more days to earn my electrical card and
they laid me off,” says Nick. “That made it an easy choice to come
to JWR in 2006.”
Standing six-feet, eight-inches and working in a coal mine isn’t
something you see everyday. “It has been challenging,” explains
Nick. “I’ve worn out a few hard hats.” Nick and his wife Cassie
make their home in Jasper with their 18 month-old daughter, Taylor. |
