September 2007![]() JWR Makes Donation to BHS Math Team "The only thing I don't like about being on the math team," says 17-year-old Clay Nelson (pictured above right) "is getting up early on Saturday mornings for competition." Clay, a senior at Brookwood High School, is one of dozens of students giving up many Saturday mornings each year to compete in math competitions throughout the area. "I joined the team several years ago to keep my math skills sharp," continues Clay. "We don't have math every semester and this is a good way keep prepared for the next class." Elaine Noland (above left) is the math team sponsor and coach. "We traveled to the The University of Alabama three times last year for tournaments," explains Mrs. Noland. "We also competed in Huntsville, Vestavia Hills and Hoover. Our students currently compete in areas of Algebra 2 and Precalculus. This donation and other support throughout the year from Jim Walter Resources is what keeps us going. I never want a student to be left out of math teams trips because he is unable to pay." |
