Why JWR As a Career: "I preciously worked 10 years for another coal company in various capacities.  I had heard that JWR was a great company to work with.  In addition to this, my wife and I have a beautiful daughter with special needs.  We had heard that the Tuscaloosa area offered outstanding programs for students with special needs.  We moved from our home in Jasper 25 years ago for these two reasons.  It has proven to be a great career move.  JWR is an outstanding company to work for.  JWR has been most generous to me and my family.  In addition to this our daughter has had outstanding experiences in the Tuscaloosa area."

:  "I began my mining career at No. 4 Mine in December of 2004.  Since starting there I have been on evening shift as a Mason  I'm also a member of the Mine Rescue and First Aid Team."

Job Duties:  "Masonry work majority of the time and anything and everything a small portion of the time.  All other duties prescribed by management, covers what work I do."
 
Favorite Part of My Job:  "The people and of course the money."

Least Favorite Part of My Job:  "Leaving the house for work."

Why JWR as a Career:  "I am a third generation coal miner, maybe it is genetic.  Honestly though, it is because I do enjoy my job and because it is a job I can take pride in."

"I started at No. 3 Mine in 1977 in the UMWA.  In 2001I was promoted to Foreman at No. 5 Mine.  When No. 5 Mine was down, I went to No. 4 Mine and am now a Longwall Foreman at No. 5 Mine."

Job Duties:  "I started out as a Brattice man then worked on a Production Section, and have worked as a Longwall Helper, a Shearer Operator, Ram Car Operator, a Miner Man and a Roof Bolter."

Why JWR as a Career:  "It's a family tradition.  My grandfather was a miner for 30 years, my father Kelly Parker was the lamp house man at No. 5 Mine, and my father-in-law, D. N. Herren, was a coal miner for Concord Mine for about 35 years. His two sons and four brothers were all coal miners as well.  My twin brother, Ronald Parker, works at No. 5 Mine and my son, Blake Parker, now works at No. 7 Mine and loves the Longwall."

: Randy began work with JWR in 1976 at Bessie Mine as an ISL.  He was promoted to an Electrician in 1976.  In 1977 he was promoted to Maintenance Training Supervisor and moved to the Training center in 1979.  In 1989 he was promoted to Electrical Maintenance Engineer and later to Senior Electrical Maintenance Engineer.

Job Duties:  Design and provide technical support for: electrical/electronic systems, mine wide monitoring systems, hoists, fans, Longwall switchgear, belt drives, power centers, vacuum breakers, etc.

Favorite Part of My Job:  Working with some very talented people and designing systems to improve safety and production.

Least Favorite Part of My Job:  Middle of the night phone calls (this is my wife's least favorite part as well).

Why Coal Mining as a Career:  "I like challenges."
