BROOKWOOD TO BIRMINGHAM
Words and Music by Jimmie Hyche
©2000 Matlin Music

Diggin' coal in this deep dark hole, I work hard for my pay,
Just like my father's father did so many of their days.
I'll thank the Lord for what I got 'till I lay my shovel down,
There ain't no gold just Blue Creek Coal from Brookwood to Birmingham.

There's true gospel at the old white church before you pass the mine,
God's children come to lay their burdens down.
This ground gave birth to many dreams in this little country town,
From Brookwood to Birmingham.

It started with a pick and mule, this black rock that they found,
Folks plowed their gardens, grew their food, worked nights beneath the ground.
Big businesses came with big machines, raised mountains from the ground.
Now everything has changed from Brookwood to Birmingham.

The commissary used to stand there where the sun goes down,
The coal train got its water there, brought goods and folks to town.
The voting house next to it finally rotted to the ground,
A vote sure stood for much more then from Brookwood to Birmingham.

There's true gospel at the old white church before you pass the mine,
God's children come to lay their burdens down.
This ground gave birth to many dreams in this little country town,
From Brookwood to Birmingham.

An old oak tree keeps vigil in a sage field south of town,
The old home place that time erased where grandpa tilled the ground.
The coal train blows its whistle as she's leaving northward bound,
Empty gardens just grow memories now,
From Brookwood to Birmingham.
